Hi Mr Detective John Carter of Mars

Fancy you being the last to know about Foxit? But I am glad you have it now, life will have 100% improved now you did way with Adobe, BTW for some reason having a PDF file on the desktop, over-rides default Foxit, and IE opens with IE PDF reader

Thought you might like to know about my new

Peter,

You can set Foxit reader to be default, in any case I would delete IE from the registry and delete any key with reference to it. IE is a major trap for male-ware on the computer. My version of XP does away with any key that Microshit uses to integrate applications with the OS. THEY ARE INHERENTLY DAMAGING SINCE THEY ARE THE GATEWAY FOR MOST MALWARE.
I will hopefully be doing a works shop on hacking win XP and Vista for security benefits; I will post it when finished. Incidently my WinXp clocks almost as fast as PCBSD and Debian Linux; with none of the security issues one has with OEM windows OS versions. So a secure windows environment can be had; but Microshit does not want anyone to know it.

Check out NVU for clean and lite HTML editing:

http://www.net2.com/nvu/

This finishes out the triad of Foxit, PDF-creator and NVU which eliminates the need for adobe(bloat) and Microshit based products. I repeat; one should never have IE, Outlook, or Messenger installed on a Windows machine; they are mal-ware magnets.

Because of what I do, I have to use Outlook, but I do use Mailwasher Pro (NZ written, http://firetrust.com/ the free version only does one email account) to screen mail, in fact MW is running all the time.

I would like nothing more but get rid of IE, but what about the updates for Windows?

Any quick way of disabling it? Originally when I had Foxit, with a PDF on the desktop, Adobe opened, anywhere else, Foxit opened. I installed Adobe Reader, then IE began opening, when I did, I began panicking at all the malware it was going to drag down, if I opened my Firewall to it.

I just been sorting documents, a whole stack of paper going back to 1993, all sorts, for the archive.

Peter,

I run no firewall on my workstations, it is unecessary if you have security set up properly. However running a firewall regardless is probably a good idea. I prefer to filter at my gateway, but that is another story. Main solution is to always do custom installations of applications and disable all start menu entries and automatic updates.

Disable all Microshit updates by eliminating the registry keys and then run Windiz:

http://windizupdate.com/

This independently allows you to update Microshit products without the MS validation tool which collects all kinds of info concerning you machine. If you like I can send you a disk (DVD) containing my latest winxp version which does not come with IE, messenger installed if you choose.

What do you run that requires outlook, I know of nothing that requires it.

Peter,

I use evolution on my linux box; runs in the Gnome interface. To my best recollection it is UTF-8 compliant.

Peter,

I am using the latest version which comes with Debian SID; however right now I mostly use squrrel mail for my IMPAP server and use webmail since I host my own Email accounts.
